Microstructure of Magnetic Platelet Suspensions

Does the shape determine the microstructure?

Artistic representation of dipolar spheres and platelets, showing greater self-assembly of spheres than platelets. PCCP front cover, issue 4, 2023.

Since platelets at low aspect ratio are effectively spheroids, it is easy to assume that they would behave similarly to dipolar spheres. This turns out not to be the case, with pronounced differences present even at low aspect ratios. Why this happens, and how we can quantify it, is explored in detail here, with some additional detail on the experimental system (and calculation of the partition function) here.
