Outreach
- Lange Nacht der Forschung (2022)
After an unfortunate COVID-hiatus, the Long Night of Research relaunched with an opportunity for young researchers to organise their own booth. My team ran a kid-friendly introduction to magnets and ferrofluids, with the opportunity to dabble in simulations for older visitors. - Falter Heureka
I had an opportunity to chat about my work in the science subsection of Falter (an Austrian newspaper), which profiled young scientists in basic research as part of their spring 2022 edition. - VHS “Bühne Frei- Junge Wissenschaft”
The Wiener Volkshochschulen (VHS) are a network of continuing education centres for the general public. As part of their young scientist series, I gave a lecture titled “Magnetische Flüssigkeiten – Flüssige Magnete?” (Magnetic Liquids – Liquid Magnets?) on my doctoral/Austrian Academy of Sciences project. (23.11.2021)
Non-Academic Projects
- Celebrating Women* in Physics (*and gender minorities)
In late 2020, some fellow academic friends and I realised that despite observing the date, the Physics department did not have any canonical events on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Supported by the Faculty of Physics (and Vienna Doctoral School of Physics), we launched an annual symposium featuring keynotes, poster sessions, flash-talks and workshops to celebrate the achievements of gender diverse scientists and discuss current challenges. After the success of the 2021 and 2022 editions, the event has been adopted by the Faculty of Physics as part of their diversity program (2023). - The ART- art against discrimination project
In order to promote the anonymous reporting tool, we (a group of doctoral student reps) asked academic staff and students to share their stories, anonymised a representative sample and, after obtaining permission and project funding, commissioned visual artists to create pieces inspired by the incidents. Aside from the distribution via flyers and social media, the art – now run by the undergraduate student union – has a homepage here.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
I am a longtime friend of IAPS – the International Association of Physics Students – and have been very involved in the past. As time permits, I still like to keep in touch by serving as an alumni rep: so if you’ve stumbled on this page and remember me from the halcyon, pre-covid student days, drop me a line!
